Tips for Choosing a Locksmith

Angie’s List has documented several cases where homeowners were scammed by shoddy work or dishonest technicians. Here are some tips to avoid being scammed:

1. Verify the locksmith's place of business. Scammers will often only use phrases such as "Los Angeles locksmith," instead of a registered business name when discussing their company. Avoid using companies that do not have an actual brick-and-mortar location. Check online directories for verification.

2. Ask for a detailed estimate. First check the fee during the telephone conversation and again on-site, before the work is started. If the estimates do not match or seem inflated, the locksmith should not be allowed to perform the work.

3. Check reviews online, but be wary of anonymous review sites since there's no guarantee that the "reviewer" is not also the company allegedly being reviewed.

4. When you hire anyone to come to your home, always ask for identification and licensing. A legitimate locksmith should be able to provide some proof of licensing and professional identification. Anyone who becomes defensive or combative when asked for identification should not be trusted. A locksmith who shows up in street clothes and a personal vehicle is another warning sign. Use your best judgment as you would for hiring any other type of service provider.
